World Heritage Site Meeting at Kilnaboy
Ireland currently has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Brú na Bóinne and Skellig Michael, but the Burren along with another six sites is being considered for nomination, since appearing on the tentative list in 2010. The nomination of any of the sites can only take place after consultation with relevant stakeholders, interested parties and local communities. Building on the success of last year’s Burren Resource Clinics, the Burren Community Charter is this year hosting a one off event which will function as both a Burren resource clinic and an open discussion on the inclusion of the Burren on the tentative list. The evening will open with a drop-in clinic, where organisations and public bodies working in the region can interact and answer the public’s questions. This will be followed by a chaired public discussion on the prospective nomination of the Burren as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There will be a representative from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht present to outline the process and implications for the region of a nomination and prospective designation. The event will be held in Kilnaboy School Hall on this Thursday the 14th of November. The resource clinic will start at 7.30pm and discussion will begin at 8.30pm. It is hoped that the community would attend both the resource clinic and also contribute to the discussion following to give their voice on this important topic. School Quiz
Locals are reminded that Corofin School Parents Committee will hold a Table Quiz at Crowley’s Bar on this Friday night November 15th commencing at 9.30pm. The organisers are hoping for a strong showing from the community and there are great prizes both for the quiz and for the accompanying fundraising raffle. The quiz is open to teams of four.
Road Works:
While it led to significant traffic disruption around Corofin village the resurfacing of Bridge Street from the Church Street corner to the Ennis Road by Clare County Council is to be welcomed by road users. The surface had been in a particularly bad condition since the conclusion of the new sewage scheme for the village two years ago. Work on resurfacing commenced on Saturday last and continued into the early days of this week. As a result there were considerable traffic delays for motorists travelling on the Ennis to Lisdoonvarna road in both directions while on Saturday a detour was in operation for traffic approaching from the south via Roxton and Baunkyle in order to bypass the village.
Information Meeting
Following the establishment of a Community Alert Group for the Corofin and surrounding areas last week it is planned to hold a public information meeting in the village before the end of November in order to involve the full support of the community in the initiative. Conor Leyden was elected Chairman of the new group with Bernard Madigan Secretary and Mary Keane Treasurer.
Gerard Kennedy is the group’s PRO. The meeting was given an outline of how the new text alert scheme is intended to work and heard that a similar scheme is about to commence in the adjoining Clouna-Monreal area where 250 households have already signed up to the programme. It is intended to expand the committee in the coming weeks to include representatives from all areas which will be covered under the new Community Alert programme.
Harps Social
With competitive fare hit once again this week owing to unplayable pitches Corofin Harps soccer club is busy planning a fundraising social which will be held at Mack’s Bar on December 14th. Tickets to event which are now on sale will also serve as raffle tickets for which some very valuable prizes are on offer.
