Corofin-Kilnaboy Notes 17 Oct

Community Plans To Be Alert

Rural communities all over Ireland are taking steps to safeguard their areas from criminals and vandals and are providing protection for the most vulnerable in their community. The effectiveness of neighbourhood watch and community alert schemes has been enhanced in recent years with the introduction of a text alert initiative which allows for rapid sharing of information on criminal or suspicious behaviour via mobile devices. This is proving a significant tool in the prevention of crime in many areas. A meeting to discuss such a scheme for the Corofin area will be held at the Teach Ceoil on this Thursday night October 17th commencing at 9.00pm. The organisers are hoping for a strong response from all areas of the parish as everyone is invited to come along and see what is being proposed.

Minor Meeting

A meeting of Corofin Minor GAA Club will be held at the clubhouse on this Thursday night commencing at 9.00pm. All members are requested to attend.

Bring & Buy For Kilnaboy

A Monster Bring n Buy Sale and Fun Day Out will take place next Sunday 20th October in Kilnaboy School Halla between 2pm and 5pm. There will be lots of attractive items for sale on the day and it is also hoped to have a mini auction to conclude. All proceeds will go towards school costs. It promises to be a great family day out with face painting, and many Halloween games being organised for the children. Anyone that would like to contribute saleable items can contact the school at 065-6837702. The school will begin to take items from Friday onwards.

Close Contest

There is a very close contest for the Corofin Golf Society ‘Golfer of the Year’ title for 2013 and the issue will be decided on Saturday November 23rd with the final singles event of the season at Ennis Golf Club. Little separates, David O’Dell, Pat Curtis and Martin Flaherty, with one round remaining, while there are two or three others who have an outside chance of claiming the title. The October outing of the local club was held at Woodstock Golf Club on Saturday last where Michael Ryan, Tubber, emerged winner from Pat McCarthy and Martin Flaherty. Colm Carey and Paul Ryan won the nines.

Tourism Matters

The Corofin Tourism Association continues to meet every two weeks as it puts in place plans for the promotion of the area for 2014. The group now has almost forty members and is encouraging other local businesses to join their ranks. The association is also anxious to raise the profile of their promotional website www.visitcorofin.com and intends to add the contact information to other village signage in the coming weeks. Fundraising to finance on-going promotional campaigns is also a priority and the local association will embark on a couple of events between now and Christmas to help in this regard.

Paid The Penalty

Corofin Harps had their second league outing in the Premier Division on Sunday last when they played Ennis side Lifford away. The sides were tied 1 – 1 at the interval with John Keane netting for Corofin. The Ennis team went ahead again early in the second period but Harps had an opportunity later in the half to level matters when they were awarded a penalty. However Jason Tierney saw his effort saved by the Lifford keeper. The home side broke away to score a third late in the game and seal the points. Meanwhile Harps B side had their first competitive game together when they entertained West Clare on Sunday morning. The westerners are one of the strongest teams in this division and ran out 5 – 0 winners in the end.
