School’s Super Gamble
December is the month when card games or gambles as they are known provide much social enjoyment locally. The popular game in the Corofin area is ‘45’ or The Old Game as it is often called. In recent years Corofin National School Parent’s Committee has used the considerable interest in the pastime as a means of raising much needed revenue for school resources and will hold their annual Super Gamble at Daffy’s Bar, Corofin on this Sunday evening December 15th commencing at 4.00pm sharp. Open to teams of three there are cash prizes as well as many other prizes to be won on the day. In addition the Parent’s Committee will provide refreshments to the participants, so a great evening is assured.
Carty’s In Concert
As part of the winter series of traditional concerts at the Teach Ceoil in Corofin John Carty and his son James will perform there on this Friday night December 13th. They will be accompanied on the night by guitar virtuoso Shane McGowan. The concerts in the series have proven very popular so far and Friday’s event is also expected to be a sell-out.
Soccer Social
Corofin Harps annual Soccer Social will be held at Mack’s Bar, Corofin on this Saturday night December 14th commencing at 9.00pm. In addition to the social a monster raffle will also form part of the evening’s entertainment and tickets have been on sale for this event over the past few weeks. On the playing front Harps A went down 2 – 0 to Bridge Untied A in the Premier Division of the Clare Soccer League at the week-end while the B team went down 4 – 1 to St. Pat’s in Kilmihil.
Recent Death
The death occurred last week of Mr. Patrick (Paddy) O’Brien of Ballard, Kilnaboy at the Mowlam Nursing Home, Ennis. His remains reposed at the Evangelical Church, Quin Road Business Park, Ennis on Thursday. A funeral service was held in the Evangelical Church on Friday at 11 o’clock, with burial immediately afterwards to Coad Cemetery, Kilnaboy.
GAA Officers
The Corofin senior club Annual General Meeting was held last weekend with the following officers elected. Chairman: Kieran Carkill, Secretary: Peadar O’Brien, Treasurer: Willie Corbett, Registrar: Mary Neylon, PRO: John Fitzgerald, Co Board delegates: Jimmy Neylon, Pat Curtis, Stevie Malone, Ambrose Heagney, Joe Cahill, Peadar O’Brien and Tony Killeen. The following members were elected to the minor club committee: John Williams, Brian Gillespie, Donal O’ Loughlin and John Fitzgerald.
The club will hold its annual race night fundraiser in Crowley’s Bar on December 27th. Horses and advertisements are currently being sold for this very entertaining event in local businesses and from club members. The support of the community through the purchase of a horse or advertisement is greatly appreciated.
Village Crib
The traditional nativity crib in the local churches is always part of the Christmas festivities. In addition this year the Corofin Tourism Association has decided to display a crib in the village to ensure that the true meaning of Christmas is also evident on the Main Street. The association has purchased a crib which will be on display in O’Sullivan’s shop in the village over the Christmas period. The local group is also busy preparing for the Christmas Market and visit by Santa to the Corofin GAA hall on Sunday December 22nd and also expressed its thanks to everyone who supported or sponsored their recent table quiz.
Christmas Scramble
Corofin Golf Society will hold a Christmas Scramble at Gort Golf Club on this Saturday December 14th and all members are invited to participate. The first tee time is at 10.00 am but all players are asked to be in attendance by 9.45 am when playing partners will be selected.
