BURREN COMMUNITY CHARTER RESOURCE CLINIC & DISCUSSION
Thursday 14th November 2013, 7.30pm.

The Burren: World Heritage Site? Hear what’s happening and have your say at the Burren Community Charter resource clinic and discussion, 14th November in Kilnaboy Hall at 7.30pm.

Ireland currently has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Brú na Bóinne and Skellig Michael, but the Burren along with another six sites is being considered for nomination, since appearing on the tentative list in 2010. The nomination of any of the sites on the tentative list for inclusion on the World Heritage List should only take place after consultation with relevant stakeholders, interested parties and local communities.

Building on the success of last year’s Burren Resource Clinics, the Burren Community Charter is this year hosting a one off event which will function as both a Burren resource clinic and an open discussion on the inclusion of the Burren on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The evening will open with a drop-in clinic, where organisations and public bodies working in the region can interact and answer the public’s questions. This will be followed by a chaired public discussion on the prospective nomination of the Burren as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There will be a representative from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht present to outline the process and implications for the region of a nomination and prospective designation.

The event will be held in Kilnaboy Village Hall on Thursday the 14th of November. The resource clinic will start at 7.30pm and discussion will begin at 8.30pm.

This is a topic which could have many impacts on the Burren and it is hoped that the community would attend both the resource clinic and also contribute to the discussion following to give their voice on this important topic.

For more information on the event and the Burren Community Charter visit www.burrencommunitycharter.com or call Áine on 091 638096. More details on UNESCO World Heritage Sites can be found on www.worldheritageireland.ie.

WILLBROOK GATHERING
Saturday 12th October 2013

The national school at Willbrook served the educational needs of a very sizeable portion of the Corofin parish since 1884. It continued to do so for 104 years until following dwindling pupil numbers and rationalisation it closed its doors in 1988. It is appropriate in this year of The Gathering, which marks the 25th anniversary of its closure that a number of past pupils have banded together to organise a reunion of all former pupils of the Willbrook school. The date selected for this unique gathering is Saturday October 12th 2013 with the event taking place as The Falls Hotel, Ennistymon. The organisers are hoping for a very good response and are confident that this will be an occasion to remember, when memories can be shared and friendships renewed. Anyone interested in knowing more about the reunion should contact one of the following: Tom Burke 087 6982210, M J Leyden 087 2524148, Sheila Organ 087 2404226, Gerry O’Loughlin 085 1743050, Jack Hanrahan 065 6837834 or Mary Ward Browne 086 8451322.

With Oonagh O’Dwyer (Wild Food Walks)

Wild food is seasonal, local, nutritious and free, beneficial to human health and can be used as food medicine.

Why not come along on a guided foraging walk and experience the Wilds of the Burren with Oonagh & Marie who have teamed up for this exhilarating and enlightening walk. Both hail from a farming background and have a deep love and passion for what they call Wilderness Therapy … … both returned to study as mature students to enhance their deep love and passion for nature and all the countryside has to offer.

Marie will guide you on the mountain paths where you can experience the wilderness and hear the stories and traditions of our ancestral farming practices going back to the first farmers of hunters & gatherers.

A Wild Food Walk is a delight, an engagement with nature, but it is also a journey into a secret world. Oonagh will give information on plant identification. To be launched on Friday 2 August, 2013 at the Genealogical Centre, Corofin.

The sleeve notes on the book provide the following details:-
Leamaneh Castle, the Burren National Park and Lake Inchiquin are well-known landmarks that help to stake out the geography of this attractive North Clare parish. Based on the church lands of two of the front line foundations of Monastic Clare, the parish has a history reaching back almost to the dawn of Monastic Ireland. Relics from monastic times include the unique Tau Cross of Killinaboy and the crozier and bells of St. Blathmac.

The secular history of the parish is equally impressive. Home to two of the most powerful branches of the O’Brien descendants of Brian Ború, namely the barons of Inchiquin and their collateral descendants and successors in title, the Leamaneh/Dromoland O’Briens, the parish was at the very nerve-centre of Clare’s historical experience. Murrough, the tanist, and his namesake, Murrough ‘of the Burnings’, are just two of the native sons whose exploits give a national dimension to this local historical discourse.

In later times Corofin was the birthplace of the Terry Alts, one of the most explosive of the secret, oath-bound factions that sought – often by violent means – to preserve traditional tenant-rights in the straitened agrarian economy of the pre-Famine decades.

Sunday 14th July 2013, 1.00pm

The Burren Tug-O-War Club will host the All Ireland Tug-O-War championships at the Corofin GAA grounds on Sunday next July 14th and this is sure to be a major spectacle. With several titles on the line competition is expected to be fierce and the local club will be competing with the best in the land in the hope of adding to their impressive haul of silverware this season. On Sunday last Burren were competing in Co. Sligo where they had to be satisfied with the silver medals in both the lightweight and heavyweight classes. They will be going all out on Sunday to add an All- Ireland title to their achievements. The championships are also a welcome boost to tourism in the Corofin area with many of the teams expected to arrive on Saturday and stay in local accommodation. Competitive fare gets under way at 1.00pm on Sunday and with fine weather predicted over the week-end a huge crowd is expected to pack the Pairc Finne venue. Gus O’Loughlin is very proud of the achievements of his charges so far this season and he is appealing to locals to come out in force on Sunday to cheer the Burren on.
